With a huge burgeoning population of more than 100 million and a Total Fertility Rate of 6.11, Democratic Republic of Congo offers a huge opportunity for food production companies. Democratic Republic of Congo is blessed with plenty of water and an arable land of 80 million hectares but only 10% of it is under cultivation due to lack of investment in agricultural infrastructure .
Sensing it as a huge opportunity, Abhita Agro Industries Private Limited of India in technical collaboration with Reliant Semillas Private Limited, Seed Company; approached Government of DR of Congo in August 2024 to invest in seed production and commercial farming to raise productivity and production of staple food, white maize.
After 5 rounds of deliberations, farm visits and due planning in collaboration with ministry of Agriculture, thus was born a commercial company" Abhita Congo Agro Industries SA". Armed with cutting edge technology of hybrid maize having a Pan African adaptation, the company is managed by veteran of 38 years in global seed industry in Africa, South Asia and South East Asia, Mr. Dharmender Kumar, capable supported by team of experts from Abhita Agro Industries Private Limited.
The project will involve a large demo field of 100 hectares in MBanza Ngungu, in Congo Central to demonstrate the potential as well as scientific way of corn cultivation. This will encourage and guide farmers to take up best cultivation practices to grow more maize per acre and at lesser cost.
Simultaneously hybrid corn seed production will be taken up to train Government officials about corn seed production as well as to build capacity for local seed production. Abhita Congo is also taking up seed production on large private lands at various locations in DR of Congo and other East African countries.
The seed will be produced on buy back guarantee of National Coordinator of seeds, who will distribute it among farmers to increase production and productivity. This will hugely contribute to building a strategic food reserve, which is a dream of Government of Congo in backdrop of drought in Central Africa during last two years.
The USP of project is the short time frame of 4 months in which the results and return on investment will happen.
